Placeholder text short-circuits this problem: viewers can see that text exists in a space and assess whether it looks right at the right density and length, without engaging with the words themselves.

Placeholder text is also practical during the early phases of design when content simply doesn't exist yet. Web and app design frequently proceed in parallel with content strategy, which means developers and designers need to build and test interfaces before the copywriter has produced a single sentence. Using lorem ipsum allows prototypes to look realistic and complete, enabling user testing, investor presentations, and developer builds to proceed on schedule. Content-first design — building layouts around real or representative content from the beginning — produces more robust results precisely because it forces designers to confront the actual constraints of the content. When real content is not yet available, "real-ish" placeholder content is a better alternative: pull actual copy from a similar existing product, use anonymized versions of real user data, or ask the copywriter for a rough draft of headlines and key body text even if the full copy isn't ready.
